Claiming your account
Velamnis does not use a traditional log-in scheme. Your account is not bound to a username and password. This might seem unfamiliar at first.
The moment you first open Velamnis or start fresh, you will be assigned a new, unclaimed account, as indicated by the yellow banner at the top of the page.
An unclaimed account is only used during the current session and will be permanently lost upon closing the browser tab or navigating away from Velamnis. You may still send files and chat using this temporary account, but to be able to reuse it, you must claim it by clicking on the Claim account link.
To claim the account, you will be asked to protect it with a password. You will be required to enter this password every time you open Velamnis, so make sure you choose a strong yet memorable password.
A word of warning here: Do not forget the password! We cannot help you recover it!
We repeat that: We cannot help you recover your password or account if you forget the password!
Velamnis has been engineered to give users 100% control over their data and privacy. Not 99%, not 99.99999%. 100%. This means we cannot help you if you lose that control. We understand that this may create certain inconveniences, but it was the decision which we felt right. The moment we open ourselves to being able to help you gain access to your data, it creates a precedent which can lead down a very undesirable path.
Once you set up your password, the browser will inform you that a file has been downloaded (or ask you to confirm the download, depending on your settings). This is your Velamnis bundle file. It contains your encrypted encryption and signing keys and various settings related to your account.
Just as with your password, this file is crucial for your account, so make sure you make several copies of it on different systems. Do not keep all your eggs in one basket. And please, do not store your Velamnis bundle file on Velamnis!
Since the encryption and signing keys are encrypted, this file is somewhat protected, but you should still make sure it cannot be easily accessed by anyone else.
Lastly, the application will require you to set up multi-factor authentication. This is mandatory and will help keep your account safe in case someone gets their hands on your Bundle file and password. You can read more on what to do about that in this article.
You may claim as many accounts as you wish.
Logging into Velamnis with your account
Once you have claimed your account, the browser will remember that you have done so and will ask you to log in the next time you open Velamnis.
For convenience, the ID of the last account to be used will be displayed so that you know which bundle file to select, in case you use more than one.
Enter your password and multi-factor authentication one time code (OTC) and you will be granted access to the system.
If you wish to open a new Velamnis account, select the start fresh link on the login window.
Early Preview - Logging in
During Early Preview, if you wish to log in with a different account than you are currently logged in, you can do so by going to the Debug 🐞page (from the top navigation toolbar) and clicking the Log in button.
The log-in experience is still under design and will change towards the Commercial Release.
